602 Crate Engines and Accessories
There are 2 different style Front Drive Kits we use for 602 Crates that are far superior to the old V-belt style pulleys and belts found on Chevy motors.
Serpentine (Jones 1441 Series)DIRT RACE CARS / LOWER COST / SERPENTINE BELT
These are primarily used on Dirt Race Cars. They are low maintenance, easy to assemble and cost effective.
A Serpentine kit features a flat ribbed belt that uses tension (resistance pressure) to hold the belt in place on the pulley setup. A continuous belt goes around the waterpump, crank and the power steering pump. You get all the brackets, pulleys and belts you need to set up the jones kit.
Radius Tooth (Jones 2441 Series)PRIMARILY ASPHALT / MORE EXPENSIVE / LOW DRAG / COG BELT
These kits are primarily used on Asphalt Modifieds and Late Models, however the last couple of years they are becoming more popular on Dirt Modifieds too. A Radius tooth system features gear-like teeth on the pulleys and a cog-belt that has teeth. Because of the teeth, the belt has minimal tension and therefore far less drag on the engine. Lower drag means more horsepower. Radius tooth kits weigh less and rev-up faster. We've seen about 4-5hp, and on a Crate car - all the little things add up. When used on a dirt modified, you must keep the belt/pulley setup clean or you could wear the teeth on the pulley and belt causing a failure. These front drive kits include all the brackets, pulleys, belts and an extra belt. And the belt to the crank is the same belt as the one to the power steer unit. NOTE: COG Belt kits must use Lightweight or electric fan. NO steel blade fans with this kit.
Options: When ordering a Jones Front Drive Kit for a 602, you will need to select the correct water pump and power steering pump setup.
Water Pump: Aluminum or Steel
Check your rule set. Most of the Dirt Sportsman classes use Steel pumps. It is the default pump with the serpentine system.
Most of the asphalt modified and late model classes allow aluminum pumps which is about $100 more than the steel kit.
Kits ending in DRT are DIRTcar legal with Steel Water Pumps.
Power Steering Pump Kit
The key here is whether to install an integrated power steering pump/tank or a pump that uses a remote tank.
Most of the Dirt Sportsman use the Serpentine Kit with a remote tank power steering pump. The remote tank setup is cheaper for the pump but you have to buy additional lines and a tank. Most of the asphalt Modifieds use an integrated PS pump setup.
The Integrated Power Steering pump/tank Kits have an AR in the kit part number.
- PS-9008-AL or PS-9008-AL-AR is with integrated tank.
NO Alternator - Kits start with 2004.
No alt or WP is a custom build with the 2004-RA-CE base and a PS Pump, PS-9008-AL or PS-9008-AL-AR
Upgrade from Serpentine to Radius Tooth/COG belt kit
There is an option to upgrade your current Serpentine kit. The pulley on the steering pump is press fit on and must be removed by a professional to install the new radius tooth pulley.
